A Way Home
About this Program
A Way Home
provides short-term shelter and wraparound support for families experiencing homelessness in Spartanburg County. A Way Home families spend their days at our Day Center while host congregations prepare for the evening. Volunteers are the backbone of keeping the Day Center open and running, especially on Sundays and weekday afternoons. If you or your congregation want to get involved, we'd love to have you!

A Place to Call Home uses volunteers to help run the Day Center, where A Way Home families spend their days. Volunteers help create a calm, welcoming environment where families can rest, connect, and get support. Shifts are available all day on Sundays and on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons from 1:00–4:30 PM. Volunteers report to A Way Home staff and the Faith Initiative Volunteer Coordinator, Sally Dyer.
- Welcome and monitor the front door (only families, staff, and volunteers are permitted inside)
- Engage with families — learn names, share conversation, play with kids
- Gently remind residents to supervise children and tidy common areas before leaving
- Secure the space at the end of your shift (lights off, door locked)
- Assist A Way Home staff with other needs as they arise
Volunteers typically have downtime during shifts, so feel free to bring a book, project, or laptop. WiFi is available at the Day Center.
